Germany has a classically European ambience, from wonderful cities beside beautiful rivers to romantic castles and striking architecture. With a long and turbulent history, this is a country which today thrives with culture and industry. Here are just a few of the highlights of arranging cheap flights to Germany.
Frankfurt
Fly into this cosmopolitan centre, home to people from around the globe, and you are sure to be thrilled by it as an international hub and a place where opposites appear to combine. Famed as the home of Goethe, many of this poet’s works were written in the city, and you can see why he found it an inspiration. He called the city ‘endearing’ and it shaped his life even after he had left. Each year people come to see Goethe’s house, which has been reconstructed to look as it once did during the Baroque period.
Additionally the Goethe Museum displays a collection of artwork, including paintings, graphics and busts from the 18th and 19th centuries, illustrating Goethe’s connections to famed artists of the city. When the weather is warm, there is no better place to be in Frankfurt than beside the water whether you wish to take a causal stroll or cycle alongside the river, or venture there on a Saturday when market stalls are set up for you to make purchases. Admire a wondrous array of architectural gems as you explore.
Berlin
One of the most influential moments in the history of Berlin was the demolition of the wall which formally divided West Berlin from East Berlin and the rest of eastern Germany. Today the city has an air of openness, totally contrasting with its past. Attractions are dotted around Berlin and a visit to the magnificent cathedral is a must. Acting as the largest Protestant church in the city, this high-renaissance baroque monument has been renovated many times since the Middle Ages. Important works of art can be seen inside as well as an organ with over 7,000 pipes – considered a masterpiece. Those interested in the Holocaust, should venture to the memorial located on what was once known as the ‘death strip’. Dedicated to the Jewish victims, the monument has an Information Centre where you can discover more about the families affected by this tragic time. The monument invites reflection on the past, a sobering reminder, yet also suggests a happier future.
A host of cities and towns beckon in Germany from the delicate beauty of Heidelberg to the spa town of Aachen and tremendously varied holidays await.
