Anyone have any good vacation ideas for me? We live in central Pennsylvania and would like to go someplace different this year. We usually go to Atlantic City every year and then to a beach-either Rehobeth or Long Beach Island. I'm tired of going to the beach and would like to do something different. Instead of 2 mini vacations I would like to take 1 longer vacation. We want to stay in the United States and the closer to PA the better-but no beaches. Any ideas? Thanks guys and gals!!
Long Island for summer vacation? We are thinking of going to Long Island for vacation in August. Would we need to have a rental or can we do quite a bit with public transport? We want to go to NYC for a day or 2 and probably just go to the beaches. Is it a good place to visit with kids? Any suggestions? Has anyone stayed at the Long Island Sheraton? Comments??

What New Jersey beach should we visit? In June, my family and I are going on vacation to New Jersey. We really want to visit the best beach possible. We are probably only going to visit the beach for only 1 or 2 days, though. We want to go to a beach that is a little bit on the Northern part of the state, so it will be closer to us. We also want a beach where there is a lot to do, including a boardwalk, shops, etc. Also, I don't want to go to a run-down dirty beach, I want to visit a beautiful clean beach. And if there was surfing there, that would be great! My ideas were: Point Pleasant Beach Surf City Beach Long Beach Island Seaside Heights I've never been to New Jersey so I don't know which are the best! Thanks(:

Best vacation spot to go for a post-graduation, 18th birthday celebration with best friends?!? Well, when I turn 18 in July 2008 my parents agreed as a graduation and 18th birthday present they would pay for me to go on a mini long weekend vacation with my best friends as one of our big last moments of fun before college. Thinking extremely far ahead.. anyone have any ideas where we could go? I'm basically looking for a place with nice beaches, fun night life for the 18+ crowd like dance or even comedy clubs. Not looking to drink of anything.. just to have a good time with my best friends before we go our separate ways. Also.. I was thinking a place with a nice hotel with a suite or VIP rooms. I was thinking Virginia Beach, Myrtle Beach, Rhode Island.. not sure! Ideas? I live in CT.. so driving is preferable.. but any ideas are welcome!
Good vacation spots near New York City? my mother and i would like to go on a last minute getaway before the summer is up. however, she doesnt fly nor does she want to drive for a long period of time. are there any places in the area that good vacation spots besides wildwood, nj or ocean city, nj? any places with beaches? perhaps long island? any suggestions?

Where to go on vacation on the (north) east coast? We live on Long Island and are looking to go on vacation some time in August - somewhere from Massachusetts to Virginia. My boyfriend and I are 25 and are looking to go for 4 days/3 nights. We're game for anything, so I'd love to hear some ideas! We already know all about VA Beach, so no mentions of that please. Also, please include a specific town (i.e. Ocean City, NJ - not the Jersey Shore)... And if possible any specifics - like hotels to stay at (preferably on the water front), places to go, and restaurants to eat at - stuff like that. Thanks so much everyone!!! By (north) east I mean north of the Mason Dixon Line - anywhere within a 7ish hour drive. We prefer something waterfront (I'm thinking of how the hotels in VA Beach are right on the beach - something like that). And please please please include not just the specific town, but a hotel on the water too. Nothing too pricey - the place in VA beach we're looking into is $166/night - so somewhere within that price range - $200/night max.
what are some vacation getaway spots like montauk? i want to go somewhere with my girlfriend this summer that is like montauk. Ya know like a nice beach and nice little town or whatever. My only prob is that montauk is other than like sightseeing and eating there isnt much to do. it seems very secluded from other towns since it is at the tip of the island. i want to go somewhere like montauk, but that has other towns within like twenty minute driving range of it. i live on long island and dont really want to drive anywhere further than 4 hours.
Has anyone vacationed at Oak Island, NC? I just reserved a condo for a week in July. The island originally was called Long Beach, but a portion has been renamed to Oak Island. Does anyone know about activities/restaurants on or around the area? Thanks for your help.
what should i bring on vacation with me? i am 14 years old and i am going on vacation with 3 of my other friends and we are going to my friends house in long island for a week. It is suppose to be really warm there and there are beaches. what should i bring?
long summer vacation to Orlando? Hello there. My husband and I plan a long summer vacation every year for the month of July. Last year we went to Europe. This year we are planning on going to the Orlando area for our vacation. This will be our first trip to Orlando and Disney World. We’ve done our homework and know about the EMH Disney offers, so we will be staying in a Disney resort while in the Disney area (Polynesian), then we will switch to a hotel across the street of Downtown Disney (Hyatt Grand regency resort). Has anyone stayed in those resorts? How are they? We will be driving there, so we’ll have our car to do our activities while not in the parks. We’ve researched things to do on international drive, and picked out a bunch. Our kids ages are 8 and 11. My question is: could you take a look at our itinerary and tell me if you think its too busy? Should we extend our vacation a few days longer? What should we keep in and take out? What are your experiences? I want to get everything figured out so we can start booking our dining reservations (character dining, etc…) and do you have any Orlando tips you would like to share with me? what type of activites/ snacks should we pack for the car ride? any answers and advice would help greatly! If you could vacation in any state in the U.S. were would you go? I would say New York it has everything you could imagine. from Niagra Falls to the 1,000 islands a NASCAR road course Lake Placid The beauty of the Hudson River the Beaches on Long Island , the Statue of Liberty and everything else NYC has to offer Its a great place to visit I LOVE NEW YORK
Does anyone know how far it (possibly driving time) is from Statesboro, GA to Tybee Island area or Savannah? We are going on vacation this summer to Tybee Island and I'm trying to find out how far it would be to drive to a waterpark that is in Statesboro, GA. Neither the condo where we are staying or the waterpark have a suitable physical address to plug into an online mapping service so I can't find out that way and the waterpark is closed until May so I can't contact them to ask directly. Also any suggestions for fun things to do in or around Savannah and Tybee island with kids would be great. Obviously there is the beach but I have young, very fair skinned kids who can only stay on the beach for so long. I would love to find out if there are places to hike or bike or things of that nature. THANKS!!
For R&P Fans only - When vacationing in the Caribbean, how long before island music drives you crazy? Just wondering if anyone has as little patience as I do with that. And if you have any interesting stories of your experiences, let me know! For me, it was about two hours. At the pool the first full day there, I was covering up the rock speakers around us with large, damp towels. By the third day I was quietly imagining some pretty horrible things to do to the beach band members. And having breakfast to some chick on their music system singing Caribbean style Beatles songs was just over-the-top nuts. Then one night was "Back to the 80's", a music era that pretty much stunk at the time and stinks even worse now. Gloria Gaynor? Bee Gees? Pull-ease!!! THANK GOD FOR iPODS!!! Wow. I guess it's only me, huh? Well, I wasn't drunk - can't seem to do that too much anymore (I stuck with mimosas - I am done with the days of rum and tequila, gin and vodka, spent too much time doin' that when I was younger and prayed a lot in the bathroom at college - ha ha). I also think that same beat, over and over, for 7 days was just a bit too much (correction: WAY too much). Can all of you really take it playing 8 hours straight, every day for 7 days, without craving good old rock and roll? God bless you for being able to handle it ! If not for my iPod, I surely would have buried my head in the sand!! I like the Bee Gees too, but I graduated high school in 1975 - when the motto was "Disco Sucks". By the time Saturday Night Fever came out, I was already sick of disco. Similar to the music of the Dominican Republic, it has the same beat throughout the whole song, every song, over and over and over, without much variation in tone or rhythm at all. Oh and there was actually very little steel drum - not like Hawaiian music at all, not really reggae (which I could have probably gotten into), but sort of Latin/Caribbean. They even played some jazz (very little), but even that had a Latin/Caribbean flavor. And to put Lennon/McCartney to that style was blasphemous, IMO. Oh PunchDrunk, you're the only one who understands me. If only I were younger . . . The music and nightlife did suck pretty badly but the sun, sand, ocean, pool and bali beds were awsome, and the food and people were wonderful. Hubby got violently ill our last day there so it was mom-daughter day at the pool (each with our own iPods) and night at the sushi bar, and we made our own fun. I do miss that warm sunny weather so much, though. Thanks for your sweet comments earlier, I just may take you up on your invitation to rant via email - and of course you are welcome to do the same!

7 mile beach in cayman island. The public area was not that good where the driver dropped us ? one person answers that we can walk from pier to the north about 10 minute to where 7 mile beach starts. However, is there any spot, i mean in front of any hotel, we can rent beach chairs and umbrella and enjoy quiet beautiful view of beach. I went to 7 mile beach in the public area last year on cruse vacation, but i dont want go that area again. the view is not as good as any other beaches in the caribean Maybe we better walking to the north until we find the nice spot. But i have two kids who may complain about walking too long.

How much money should I take on my vacation? My boyfriend and I are going to Treasure Island, FL for a long week. We'll get there Friday morning and will leave Monday morning. We're planning on eating in our hotel room (it has a kitchenette) for breakfast and lunch, then going out for dinner and drinks each night. We don't plan to do any attractions or anything, just lay around the beach and pool and relax. About how much will groceries, dinners out, and drinks cost us for the weekend?

Which Caribbean island is the best to visit in december? I am going on a vacation with my family in december and I am wondering which island do you suggest visiting. We would like to go to one that is clean, has nice people, has beautiful views, and great beaches. One that has some histories and artifacts would be nice too! We have been looking at Barbados but are afraid that the island is too small for a vaction that is 10-14 days long. We will want to go to an island that has lots of water activities to do. If you have any suggestions that would be great!
Rainy Day Activities in for families in DE and MD? Hi We are traveling to Fenwick Island, DE for a week long vacation on Saturday but I see now that the weather says it is going to rain most of the week. Our big plan had been to be beach bums most of the week and now I'm not sure of what we can do Any suggestions would be great.
Nassau Island vs. Paradise Island (Bahamas)? I cant decide where to take a vacation Nassau or Paradise Island. Which one has more shopping(not like outdoor markets but real stores) and a longer beach for walking? which one has more activities. (I don't really like historical activities though)

Vacation ideas for group of 22 people? A group of friends (let's say 13 adults, 9 kids aged 3 - 9) living in the Pacific Northwest of the United States, have over the years gone on 3 wonderful week long vacations together. We have visited 1. A villa in Tuscany 2. A resort in Costa Rica 3. A huge beach house in Hawaii We would like recommendations for other places we could go as a group. A perfect place for us would be a huge house on a beach with a swimming pool, a huge kitchen, and dining room table that would seat 13 adults. We really like a great shared community space. However, we are flexible. If you know a place on the beach in Belize that comes with its own cook we would certainly be interested. Specific recommendations and descriptions of what you like about the place would be appreciated. We are currently thinking about Thailand or Vietnam, but are open to ideas. For example, a recommendation for a villa on the island of Lamu might also be interesting to dream about even if we could not afford it.
To Cruise or Not To Cruise? I get very sea-sick/car-sick quite easily, but i'd really like to go on a cruise vacation. I hear a "drug" called, DRAMAMINE can help the situation, but I'd like to hear other opinions. I've taken a boat ride from Long Beach to Catalina Island, and I needed an "aid" to help me with the nausea and I had to sit on the open upper deck. Thanks for your input!
Vacation Spots? Hey, my two girlfriends and i want to go on a road trip... we live on long island and really would like to go no further than a 5 hour drive. We are looking for a beach type location, that has a good night life... any answers???
Family vacation ideas? Were in the Northeastern USA, want to drive (not too far). Family of four, 16boy 12girl Beaches etc. We went to Hampton Beach last year, enjoyed the boardwalk, seafood restaurants.. Any suggestions?? Have you been to Boston?? Long Island??
First Vacation With Him? My boyfriend and I have been together for good while... We are taking our first vacation together back to his hometown on Long Island in New York. There I am going to be meeting his parents for the first time. I am very nervous because I love him and I want the two most important people in his life to like me.. I know to be myself because thats all I really can be. They don't speak English and I only know enough to Spanish to say short little phrases like "I love you.." or "I miss you.." ...etc.. We plan to do things like go shopping in Manhattan..going to the beach.. etc.. Our first vacation together..What am I in for? ...how am I going to tell a story if we don't even speak the same language?
Beach outfits? I'm going to be visiting an island soon, and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for what clothing to pack. It's going to be a week-long vacation and of course I'll be in the ocean a lot, but I'll also have to attend a few fancy restaurants. Thanks in advance!!!
Where is a good vacation spot? I live on the East Coast and wanted to go away with my husband in August to celebrate our anniversary. We were looking at the Dominican Republic because I love the beach and warm water, and he loves golf. We both love spas, and resorts that are all-inclusive (food). i found out it will take forever to get our passports renewed, due to a huge backlog, and even the expedited process is taking forever.. I now want to find somewhere to go where we don't need a passport. Don't really want to do Vegas/Cali because it's a long plane ride for us from NJ. Anyone know of a romantic island-like setting closer to east coast/carribean like, all-inclusive resorts that you don't need a passport?
Looking for vacation spot in the east (No florida)? We are a family of 4 living on long island and want to drive somewhere on a tight budget as south as georgia, as west as tennessee, or as north as maine. We are going in july for a week. Every family member has a preference. Me (18, male)- i will go anywhere for any type of trip, but prefer a beach, but not necessary. Sister (20, female)- prefers a beach, does not like bugs (hiking) girly girl.. but we wouldnt mind hiking for a day where she could stay soemwhere else if she doesnt want to come. Dad (43)- does not want a place where beach is the only option because he doesnt like the beach much, wants hiking, scenary, or city, etc. Mom (42)- will do anything So basically the best spot would be a city of hiking area with a beach type place nearby any suggestions?
Need help with planning Maui vacation!? Staying at Grand Wailea for 5 nights in April for a work conference. Planning to stay an extra 5 nights after that. We were planning on getting a condo on the west side of the island. We are in our thirties, and would like to be on a nice, long beach, and be near shopping and restaurants. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good condo to stay at? Also, should we stay at the same condo for 5 nights, or should we break that up? For example, stay a couple nights right in Lahaina and then 3 nights in Kaanapali? Or 3 nights in Kaanapali, and 2 nights in Hana. Any ideas? Just want to make sure we get the most of our trip. Thanks

Where do you go for vacations? Do you have a regular spot? Here's Mine: Summer Break: Nantucket, MA Winter Break: Palm Beach, Florida Spring Break: English Virgin Islands (Caribbean) Long Weekends: Vail, Colorado We have this standard vacation routine down. Every few years we'll go somewhere out of the U.S., but usually we don't. Hmm.. I don't understand why so many people go to Cancun! What is there to do? I've been there once and it is very commercial.
Best Caribbean Resort with beach snorkeling? Greetings from chilly Chicago! My husband and I are planning next year's vacation. Our usual MO is Hawaii, given that it's easy to get to and the weather is consistent. We'd like to switch it up this year and hit the Carribbean. Can anyone suggest a resort ($350 - $500 per night) that has snorkeling right off the beach? I could lay there all day but the hubby gets bored. I'm open to any island as long as there is a little bit of activity going on outside of the resort. Think EcoTours or scuba. Thanks so much!
HELP! I've got 2 free plane tickets and want to plan a vacation, tropical and inexpensive, where would you go? THIS IS A BIT LONG< READ ONLY IF YOU HAVE THE TIME TO HELP ME DECIDE: THANKS! First of all I don't want to sound like I am complaining here, just confused on where to go. I realize I am very lucky to have the tickets! The plane tickets are for anywhere in the U.S. plus Cancun, Bahamas, Jamaica, Puerto Rico and Aruba. Most of these places outside the U.S. would be too expensive though in terms of hotel and food for me right now for two people, so where else in the mainland U.S. could I visit that is somewhat near a nice beach, maybe some shells, and isn't too expensive for a hotel there and food? I only have about an extra 1,000 for a 3 day trip somewhere for the hotel and food and spending. All I want to do is spend some quality time with my husband and sit and watch the waves, drink a tropical drink at a tiki hut, swim in a huge pool and possibly take a boat out to a little island to find some shells. (Otherwise I also have free hotel rooms at any Harrah's hotel in the U.S. so I guess they have Harrah's in Las Vegas, Atlantic City, New Orleans, Phoenix, and other places more inland in the U.S. That would be very cheap then since I would then have free air and hotel, but none of those places is really that tropical!) I could also choose to fly to New Orleans or Miami and try a 4 day cruise. Upside of that: fairly cheap and could see Key West AND Mexico ! And lots of food all included in the price Downside: I've never been on a cruise , sometimes there are hidden costs to consider, tipping, extra excursion, etc. and I wouldn't get into the pool with tons of people, no privacy, and could seem like I'm stuck on a boat with a bunch of drunks since I heard the 4 days cruises are "party cruises". Again see I'm totally stuck on what to do and where to go with these tickets! Anyway if I don't do the Harrah's free hotel thing or the cruise then, I was thinking possibly Pensacola, Florida since it is supposed to be cheaper and they still offer the touristy things to do there, but not sure if that might be too boring. Do you have other ideas that could work? I wouldn't mind using the free tickets to California but then the hotel prices are just too high. And Virginia Beach is supposed to be nice but I'm not sure if it is expensive to visit and I know it won't be as tropical as Florida or Cancun of course since there will doubtfully be tiki huts and tropical drinks/ not sure though? Also lots and lots of people say go to Cancun but I worry about a few things: crime to and from the hotels, crime at the hotels, crime going to dinner in the cities and I'd hate to see children begging on the beach on my vacation or stray dogs starving to death running down the beaches. If you've gone there, is that what you've encountered ever? Some previous yahoo people said that was what it was like, not fun for a vacation then. Someone recommended a place calledCancun Palace (p.s. my research shows: Le Blanc in Cancun looks amazing if you have more money than me for the trip!), someone else said Myrtle Beach, others Key West? Has anyone been to Key West lately, do you have any quiet beaches or are they all packed with crazy tourists? If I can't come up with a trip that my husband would also like, then he said I should just use one of the tickets to fly to my niece's wedding in Minneapolis and wait for the other ticket for something else ....BORING use of the 2 tickets I say, and then I might never go on the somewhat more "romantic" and "relaxing" trip with my husband. I think I'd rather just pay for the wedding ticket for myself separately.Sooooo ...... if you could go anywhere, where would you fly for a fairly inexpensive vacation with my 2 free tickets? I'm totally stumped on what to do and where to go! Thanks for any input! TRVLLADY- THANKS, my husband just said the same thing, make a list to help decide....so your advice was right on target since I am stuck. And I will look into Virginia Beach more extensively then as well!

how will you be guaranteed to be found on a stranded island? Abe and Esther Stein are flying to Australia for a two week vacation to celebrate their 40th anniversary. Suddenly, over the public address system, the Captain announces, "Ladies and Gentlemen, I am afraid I have some very bad news. Our engines have ceased functioning and we will attempt an emergency landing. Luckily, I see an uncharted island below us and we should be able to land on the beach. However, the odds are that we may get stranded on this deserted island for a very long time." Thanks to the skill of the flight crew, the plane lands safely on the island. Once on the island, Abe turns to his wife and asks, "Esther, did we pay our charity pledge check to the Synagogue yet?" "No, sweetheart," she responds. Abe, still shaken from the crash landing, then asks, "Esther, did we pay our United Jewish Appeal pledge?" "Oiy, no! I'm sorry. I forgot to send that check too," she says. "One last ting, Esther. Did you remember to send the check for the Synagogue Building Fund," he asks? "Oiy, forgive me, Abe," begged Esther. "I didn't send that one either." Abe grabs her and gives her the biggest kiss he has given her in 40 years. Esther pulls away and asks him, "What was that for?" Abe answers, "We're Saved! They'll find us!" ok i guess this is more jewish...check it out!
What are your best memories from Aruba? (or other Caribbean islands)? I've been there for two-week long vacations in February of 2007 and 2008. They've been amazing. I'm a 16yo girl and I've scuba dived, snorkeled, but also drank on the beach cause there's basically no drinking age! What are some of your best memories? Also, if you went to any other partying Caribbean islands, tell me some of your best times!
Curacao Vacation? My family and I will be flying to Curacao in the summer from JFK Airport in New York City. How long is the flight? What is the island like? Cuisine? Beaches?
Hawaiian Vacation: How much money should I expect to spend? I'm thinking about going to hawaii with my girlfriend... if we buy tickets early, they will be about $250 each. We could stay for a week in a condo that a friend has a timeshare with for another $250 each. So now we are up to $500 each... and the question I am trying to find out is: About how much should I expect to spend on food and other touristy stuff? We don't plan on going on any "tours"... mainly just enjoying the beaches and what not. But yeah, if you have recently been to hawaii on vacation... can you tell me how long you stayed and how much money you spent while there (and what it was on if you can remember). Thanks! P.s. The condo is located on "Big Island, Kailua-Kona"
beach trip question...easy 10 points? Okay so, long story short about every year now my dad, my stepmom, stepbrother, and their extended family go down to Corolla, NC every summer for our vacation. We leave around 3:00 A.M. Saturday morning and get there around 1-2ish in the afternoon (we live outside of Pittsburgh, PA). It takes us around 10-11 hours normally because of the severely congested traffic on the main highway that runs through the Outer Bank island, which is Route 12, along with rush hour traffic and beach traffic. It just so happens that THIS year, my mom is making me compete in my annual horse show on August 3rd, and the rest of my family goes down to the beach the morning of August 2nd. So, I will leave the horse show when I'm down, which is approx. around 3-5 P.M. on that Sunday. Without ANY traffic, mind you, how long would it take my dad and I to get to Corolla from Pittsburgh? We will probably experience some rush hour traffic, but nothing more than that, right?
Vrbo.com: Will you help me find a vacation renatal? I'm looking for a vacation rental in the Sarasota, FL area from approx. June 7th, 8th, or 9th to June 14th, 15th, or 16th... It should sleep 8+ people. Depending on amount it sleeps, should be around 1,900 per week? The areas you should look in are: Sarasota, Longboat Key, Siesta Key, Casey Key, Anna Maria Island, and the surrounding areas. Must be luxurious.. not "Ghetto!" Must be affordable.. Preferably on the beach! Best finds will get best answer vote! There are just so many houses, it would take quite a long time to search through them... THANK YOU!

What is the lesson of this story? David Pradarelli Assalam-aleikum wa rahmatullah! I came to Islam pretty much on my own. I was born and raised Roman Catholic, but I always had a deep fascination with the spiritualities of other cultures. My Journey started when I desired to have a relationship with my creator. I wanted to find my spirituality, and not the one I was born with. I spent some time in the Catholic religious order known as the Franciscans. I had many friends and I enjoyed prayer times, but it just seemed to relaxed in its faith, and there was, in my opinion, too much arrogance and hypocrisy. When I had returned back from the order into secular living again, I once again was searching for my way to reach God (Allah). One night I was watching the news on television, and of course they were continuing their one-sided half-truth reports on Muslims (always in a negative light instead of balancing it by showing the positive side as well) with images of violence and terrorism. I decided long ago that the news media has no morals whatsoever and will trash anyone for that "juicy story", and I pretty much refused to believe anything they said. I decided to research Islam for myself and draw my own conclusions. What I found paled all the negative images that the satanic media spewed forth. I found a religion deep in love and spiritual truth, and constant God-mindfullness. What may be fanatacism to one person may be devotion to another. I picked up a small paperback Qur'an and began devouring everything I could. It opened my eyes to the wonder and mercy of ALLAH, and I found the fascination growing every day...it was all I could think about. No other religion including Catholicism impacted me in such a powerful way...I actually found myself in God-awareness 24 hours a day 7 days a week...each time I went to my five daily prayers, I went with anticipation...finally! What I have been searching for all of my life. I finally got enough courage to go to a mosque and profess the Shahadah before my Muslm brothers and sisters. I now am a practicing Muslim and I thank ALLAH for leading me to this place: Ashhahdu anna la ilaha ilallah wa Muhammadur rasul ALLAH! This means: "I believe in the oneness and totalness of ALLAH and that Muhammad(peace and blessings be upon him)is the chosen prophet of ALLAH." I now also accept Jesus as no longer equal with ALLAH, but sent as Muhammad was sent ...to bring all of mankind to submission to the will of ALLAH! May all of mankind find the light and truth of ALLAH. Ibrahim Karlsson I was born in an ordinary , non-religious Swedish home, but with a very loving relationship to each other. I had lived my life 25 years without really thinking about the existence of God or anything spiritual what-so-ever; I was the role model of the materialistic man. Or was I? I recall a short story I wrote in 7th grade, something about my future life, where I portray myself as a successful games programmer (I hadn't yet even touched a computer) and living with a Muslim wife!! OK, at that time Muslim to me meant dressing in long clothes and wearing a scarf, but I have no idea where those thoughts came from. Later, in high school, I remember spending much time in the school-library (being a bookworm) and at one time I picked up a translated Qur'an and read some passages from it. I don't remember exactly what I read, but I do remember finding that what it said made sense and was logical to me. Still, I was not at all religious, I couldn't fit God in my universe, and I had no need of any god. I mean, we have Newton to explain how the universe works, right? Time passed, I graduated and started working. Earned some money and moved to my own apartment, and found a wonderful tool in the PC. I became a passionate amateur photographer, and enrolled in activities around that. At one time I was documenting a marketplace, taking snapshots from a distance with my telelens when an angry looking immigrant came over and explained that he would make sure I wasn't going to take any more pictures of his mum and sisters. Strange people those Muslims... More things related to Islam happened that I can't explain why I did what I did. I can't recall the reason I called the "Islamic information organisation" in Sweden, ordering a subscription to their newsletter, buying Yosuf Ali's Qur'an and a very good book on Islam called Islam - our faith. I just did! I read almost all of the Qur'an, and found it to be both beautiful and logical, but still, God had no place in my heart. One year later, whilst out on a patch of land called "pretty island" (it really is) taking autumn-color pictures, I was overwhelmed by a fantastic feeling. I felt as if I were a tiny piece of something greater, a tooth on a gear in God's great gearbox called the universe. It was wonderful! I had never ever felt like this before, totally relaxed, yet bursting with energy, and above all, total awareness of god wherever I turned my eyes. I don't know how long I stayed in this ecstatic state, but eventually it ended and I drove home, seemingly unaffected, but what I had experienced left uneraseable marks in my mind. At this time Microsoft brought Windows-95 to the market with the biggest marketing blitz known to the computer industry. Part of the package was the on-line service The Microsoft Network. And keen to know what is was I got myself an account on the MSN. I soon found that the Islam BBS were the most interesting part of the MSN, and that's where I found Shahida. Shahida is a American woman, who like me has converted to Islam. Our chemistry worked right away, and she became the best pen-friend I have ever had. Our e-mail correspondence will go down in history: the fact that my mailbox grew to something like 3 megabytes over the first 6 months tells its own tale. She and I discussed a lot about Islam and faith in god in general, and what she wrote made sense to me. Shahida had an angels patience with my slow thinking and my silly questions, but she never gave up the hope in me. Just listen to your heart and you'll find the truth she said. And I found the truth in myself sooner than I'd expected. On the way home from work, in the bus with most of the people around me asleep, and myself adoring the sunset, painting the beautifully dispersed clouds with pink and orange colours, all the parts came together, how God can rule our life, yet we're not robots. How I could depend on physics and chemistry and still believe and see Gods work. It was wonderful, a few minutes of total understanding and peace. I so long for a moment like this to happen again! And it did, one morning I woke up, clear as a bell, and the first thought that ran through my brain was how grateful to God I were that he made me wake up to another day full of opportunities. It was so natural, like I had been doing every day of my life! After these experiences I couldn't no longer deny God's existence. But after 25 years of denying God it was no easy task to admit his existence and accept faith. But good things kept happening to me, I spent some time in the US, and at this time I started praying, testing and feeling, learning to focus on God and to listen to what my heart said. It all ended in a nice weekend in New York, of which I had worried a lot, but it turned out to be a success, most of all, I finally got to meet Shahida! At this point there was no return, I just didn't know it yet. But God kept leading me, I read some more, and finally got the courage to call the nearest Mosque and ask for a meeting with some Muslims. With trembling legs I drove to the mosque, which I had passed many times before, but never dared to stop and visit. I met the nicest people there, and I was given some more reading material, and made plans to come and visit the brothers in their home. What they said, and the answers they gave all made sense. Islam became a major part of my life, I started praying regularly, and I went to my first Jumma prayer. It was wonderful, I sneaked in, and sat in the back, not understanding a word the imam was saying, but still enjoying the service. After the khutba we all came together forming lines, and made the two 'rakaas'. It was yet one of the wonderful experiences I have had on my journey to Islam. The sincerity of 200 men fully devoted to just one thing, to praise God, felt great! Slowly my mind started to agree with my heart, I started to picture myself as a Muslim, but could I really convert to Islam? I had left the Swedish state-church earlier, just in case, but to pray 5 times a day? to stop eating pork? Could I really do that? And what about my family and friends? I recalled what Br. Omar told me, how his family tried to get him admitted to an asylum when he converted. Could I really do this? By this time the Internet wave had swept my country, and I too had hooked up with the infobahn. And "out there" were tons of information about Islam. I think I collected just about every web page with the word Islam anywhere in the text, and learned a lot. But what really made a change was a text I found in Great Britain, a story of a newly converted woman with feelings exactly like mine. 12 hours is the name of the text. When I had read that story, and wept the tears out of my eyes I realized that there were no turning back anymore, I couldn't resist Islam any longer. Summer vacation started, and I had made my mind up. I had to become a Muslim! But after all, the start of the summer had been very cold, and if my first week without work was different, I wouldn't lose a day of sunshine by not being on the beach. On the TV the weatherman painted a big sun right on top of my part of the country. OK then, some other day... The next morning; a steel grey sky, with ice-cold gusts of wind outside my bedroom window. It was like God had decided my time was up, I could wait no longer. I had the required bath, and dressed in clean clothes, jumped in my car and drove the 1 hour drive to the mosque. In the Mosque I approached the brothers with my wish, and after dhuhr prayer the Imam and some brothers witnessed me say the Shahada. Alhamdulillah! And to my great relief all my family and friends have taken my conversion very well, they have all accepted it, I won't say they were thrilled, but absolutely no hard feelings. They can't understand all the things I do. Like praying 5 times a day on specific times, or not eating pork meat. They think this is strange foreign customs that will die out with time, but I'll prove them wrong. InshaAllah! Abd al-Hayy Moore I became a Muslim when it seemed I had already accepted Islam in my bones, as if beyond choice, and I only had to make a leap to embrace it formally. Outwardly I was content; inwardly I was coasting. My three-year-old theatre company was disbanded after a hilariously chaotic production for a Tim Leary Benefit at the Family Dog in San Francisco, circa '68 -- naturally the orange juice everyone had passed around was spiked, so that chorus members were doing the final scene in the first ten minutes -- and for six months I had been methodically typing out poetry manuscripts in my attic in Berkeley preparatory to a big publishing peak. I considered myself a Zen Buddhist. But I was other things as well. My normal routine was to get up, sit zazen, smoke a joint, do half an hour of yoga, then read the "Mathnawi" of Rumi, the long mystical poem of that great Persian Sufi of the thirteenth century. Then I met the man who was to be my guide to our teacher in Morocco, Shaykh Muhammad ibn al-Habib, may Allah be pleased with him. At first the meeting was simply remarkable, and my guide simply a remarkable man. But soon our encounter was to become extraordinary, leading to a revolution in my life from which I have never recovered and never hope to. The man looked like an eccentric Englishman. He too had only recently come out of the English version of the Hippie Wave. He was older, refined in his manners, spectacularly witty and intellectual, but of that kind prevalent then who had hobnobbed with the Beatles and knew the Tantric Art collection of Brian Jones firsthand. He had been on all the classic drug quests -- peyote in the Yucatan, mescaline with Laura Huxley -- but with the kif quest in Morocco he had stumbled on Islam and then the Sufis, and the game was up. A profound change had taken place in his life that went far beyond the psychedelic experience. For the three days following our meeting, two other Americans and I listened in awe as this magnificent storyteller unfolded the picture of Islam, of the perfection of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, of the Sufis of Morocco, and of the 100-year-old plus Shaykh, sitting under a great fig tree in a garden with his disciples singing praises of Allah. It was everything I'd always dreamed of. It was poetry come alive. It was the visionary experience made part of daily life, with the Prophet a perfectly balanced master of wisdom and simplicity, an historically accessible Buddha, with a mixture of the earthiness of Moses, the otherworldliness of Jesus, and a light all his own. The prophetic knowledge our guide talked about was a kind of spiritual existentialism. It was a matter of how you enter a room, which foot you entered with, that you sipped water but gulped milk, that you said, "Bismillah" (In the Name of Allah) before eating or drinking, and "Al-hamdulillah" (Praise be to Allah) afterwards, and so on. But rather than seeing this as a burden of hundreds of "how-to's," it was more like what the LSD experience taught us, that there is a "right" way to do things that has, if you will, a cosmic resonance. It is a constant awareness of courtesy to the Creator and His creation that itself ensures and almost visionary intensity. It is hard to put forward any kind of explanation of Islam, to try to suggest the beauty of its totality, through the medium of words. The light of Islam, since it is transformational and alchemical in nature, almost always comes via a human messenger who is a transmitter of the picture by his very being. Face to face with our guide, what struck us most was his impeccable, noble behavior. He seemed to be living what he was saying. Finally the moment came, as a surprise, when he confronted me with my life. "Well," he said one morning after three full days of rapturous agreement that what he was bringing to us was the best thing we'd ever heard, "What do you think? Do you want to become a Muslim?" I hedged. "It's the most beautiful thing I've heard about so far. After all my Zen Buddhism, all my yoga, Tibetan Buddhism and Hindu gurus, this is certainly it! But I think I would like to travel a little, see the world, go to Afghanistan (then unoccupied), maybe meet my Shaykh in a mountain village far off somewhere." "That's not good enough. You have to decide now. Yes or no. If it's yes, then we start on a great adventure. If it's no, then no blame, I've done my duty. I'll just say goodbye and go on my way. But you have to decide now. I'll go downstairs and read a magazine and wait. Take your time." When he had left th
Would you go to hawaii for a month vacation by yourself if you had the chance? I graduated college and before I begin working full time I would like to make a long vacation before I begin. I have always wanted to make the move to hawaii but am having second thoughts about it. Anyway, I thought that if I just take a month vacation to Oahu or Maui it would get it out of my system. I am obsessed with hawaii, been there many times, but never by myself. I would stay in a hostel so I could meet people. Anyway, I have the money for the plane and hostel and Enough for basics like food, some drinks, and tiny bit of touring. Just planning on hitting the beach every day and taking public transportation to tour the island. Anyway, I am nervous that I will regret spending the couple grand I saved up, especially if I get bored and wind up not having as much fun as I thought I would. It is freezing now and I want out of the snow! Do you think I should just go for it? Better take a shot and fail than always wonder what if! Plus I have a job lined up for me when I get back here in Chicago......... I am just so nervous about the being by myself kind of thing, the dorms dont bother me because I lived in college dorms for 2 years and am used to living with other people...... I am just so nervous about the being by myself and gettiing bored and/or depressed, the dorms dont bother me because I lived in college dorms for 2 years and am used to living with other people...... btw I am living with my folks at the moment
NON touristy things to do in Hawaii? Were planning our honeymoon / long overdue vacation... We pretty much just want privacy, to rent a jeep and get lost in the jungle, drink on the beach, screw under waterfalls, that sort of thing. We are planning for about a week's stay. All i can find on the web is 'group tourist activities' yuck! Everything is on a low budget, so where shoud we stay? Which island should we go to? Are there liquor stores in Hawaii, or do we have to blow $$ at the bars? If it helps, we are nature lovers not people persons... thanks, i was thinking the same thing, we want to homestead/retire there someday anyway.
Molokai, Hawaii question After the Molokai Ranch closed (who owns about a third of the island), I heard that people can no longer access the land that is owned by the ranch. Is this true? If it's true, how can people access the western portion of the island, for example Papohaku Beach? I was looking to book a vacation rental there for next year, but now I wonder if visitors are still allowed to go there.
Dolphins, snorkeling, boat tours in St. Petersburg, Florida? My boyfriend and I just turned 24 and we are taking our first Florida vacation. We are looking for some great places to visit around St. Petersburg Florida. We plan on visiting the Florida Aquarium, Adventure Island Water Park, and we are making the long trip from St. Petersburg to Orlando for Sea World! What I am really interested in though is swimming with the dolphins or at least a boat tour to see them, I want to find a place to go snorkeling and maybe scuba diving, anything on the water. I really like the idea of the guided boat tours and kayaking or rafting. I have looked in the St. Petersburg area online for these kinds of things and Im just not finding a lot very close. We dont want to spend our entire vacation driving. Does anyone have any suggestions on some great things to do in the St. Petersburg/St.Pete Beach area? Remember water is key and the distance is important too :) Thanks for the help! I should probably mention that I am on my boyfriends profile. I forgot to log him out. Its a girl guy thing not guy guy thing :)
A question of priorities? A retired corporate executive decided to take a vacation. He booked himself on a Caribbean cruise and proceeded to have the time of his life until the boat sank. He found himself on an island with no other people, no supplies, nothing, only bananas and coconuts. After about four months, he is lying on the beach one day when the most gorgeous woman he has ever seen rows up to the shore. In disbelief, he asks her, "Where did you come from? How did you get here?" She replies, "I rowed from the other side of the island. I landed here when my cruise ship sank." "Amazing," he says. "You were really lucky to have a row boat wash up with you." "Oh, this?" replies the woman. "I made the boat out of raw material I found on the island. The oars were whittled from pandanus tree branches. I wove the bottom from palm branches, and the sides and stern came from a eucalyptus tree." "But, where did you get the tools?" "Oh, that was no problem," replied the woman. "On the south side of the island, a very unusual stratum of alluvial rock is exposed. I found if I fired it to a certain temperature in my kiln, it melted into forgeable, ductile iron. I used that for tools and used the tools to make the hardware." The guy is stunned. "Let's row over to my place," she says. After a few minutes of rowing, she docks the boat at a small wharf. As the man looks to shore, he nearly falls out off the boat. Before him is a stone walk leading to an exquisite bungalow painted in blue and white. While the woman ties up the rowboat with an expertly woven hemp rope, the man can only stare ahead, dumb-struck. As they walk into the house, she says casually, "It's not much, but I call it home. Sit down, please. Would you like a drink?" "No. No thank you," he says, still dazed. "I can't take any more coconut juice." "It's not coconut juice," the woman replies. "I have a still. How about a Pina Colada?" Trying to hide his continued amazement, the man accepts, and they sit down on her couch to talk. After they have exchanged their stories, the woman announces, "I'm going to slip into something more comfortable. Would you like to take a shower and shave? There is a razor upstairs in the bathroom cabinet." No longer questioning anything, the man goes into the bathroom. There, in the cabinet, is a razor made from a bone handle. Two shells honed to a hollow ground edge are fastened on to its end inside a swivel mechanism. "This woman is amazing," he muses. "What next?" When he returns, she greets him wearing nothing but vines, strategically positioned, and smelling faintly of gardenias. She beckons for him to sit down next to her. "Tell me," she begins suggestively, slithering closer to him, "We've been out here for a really long time. You've been lonely. There's something I'm sure you really feel like doing right now, something you've been longing for all these months?" She stares into his eyes. He can't believe what he's hearing. "You mean......" he swallows excitedly, and tears start to form in his eyes "..... I can check my e-mail from here?
Have you ever been shipwrecked? Joke for you.? Mugz finally decides to take a vacation. He books himself on a Caribbean cruise and proceeds to have the time of his life - until the boat sank. He found himself swept up on the shore of an island with no other people, no supplies... Nothing. Only bananas and coconuts. After about four months, he is lying on the beach one day when the most gorgeous woman he has ever seen rows up to him. In disbelief, he asks her, "Where did you come from? How did you get here?" "I rowed over from the other side of the island," she says. "I landed here when my cruise ship sank." "Amazing," he says. "You were really lucky to have a rowboat wash up with you." "Oh, this?" replies the woman. "I made the rowboat out of raw material found on the island. I whittled the oars from gum tree branches; I wove the bottom from palm branches; and the sides and stern came from a Eucalyptus tree." "But ... but ... that's impossible," stutters Mugz. "You had no tools or hardware. How did you manage?" "Oh, no problem," replies the woman. "On the South side of the island, there is a very unusual strata of alluvial rock exposed. I found if I fired it to a certain temperature in my kiln, it melted into forgeable ductile iron. I used that for tools and used the tools to make the hardware." Mugz is stunned. "Let's row over to my place," she says. After a few minutes of rowing, she docks the boat at a small wharf. As Mugz looks onto shore, he nearly falls out of the boat. Before him is a stone walk leading to an exquisite bungalow painted in blue and white. While the woman ties up the rowboat with an expertly woven hemp rope, he can only stare ahead, dumbstruck. As they walk into the house, she says casually, "It's not much, but I call it home. Sit down, please. Would you like to have a drink?" "No, no thank you," he says, still dazed. "Can't take any more coconut juice." "It's not coconut juice," the woman replies. "I built a still. How about a Pina Colada?" Trying to hide his continued amazement, he accepts, and they sit down on her hand-woven couch to talk. After they have exchanged their stories, the woman announces, "I'm going to slip into something more comfortable. Would you like to take a shower and shave? There is a razor upstairs in the cabinet in the bathroom." No longer questioning anything, Mugz goes into the bathroom. There, in the cabinet, is a razor made from a bone handle. Two shells honed to a hollow-ground edge are fastened on to its end inside of a swivel mechanism. "WOW! This woman is amazing," he muses, "what next?" When he returns, she greets him wearing 'nothing but vines' strategically positioned, and smelling faintly of lotion. She beckons for him to sit down next to her. "Tell me," she begins suggestively, slithering closer to him, "We've been out here for a really long time. I know you've been lonely. There's something I'm sure you really feel like doing right now, something you've been longing for all these months. You know..." She stares into his eyes. He can't believe what he's hearing! "You mean ..." he swallows excitedly, "... you have Internet here!!???"
Is anyone worried about visiting Tobago with the increase in crime? I was thinking of bringing my family to Tobago for a visit and was doing some research on the net. I was shocked to find stories (from the actual victims) of crimes in Tobago. How do Trinidadians feel about visiting Tobago? Here are some of the stories I found:- http://www.thetobagonews.com/index.pl/article?id=11356595 and this different one as well -------- Posted on: 4:23 am, January 09, 2009 Save This letter was published in Tobago News today: THE Editor: The ever-increasing news of robberies and violent assaults in Tobago have been matched 100 times over by painful reports on websites for potential Tobago visitors. Tobago is rapidly becoming a "no go" destination for all but the wealthy few who are happy being locked up in exclusive resorts with little or no contact with the richness and spirit of Tobago life and culture. I have been a regular visitor to the island for fifteen years, taking my precious two weeks vacation primarily in Charlotteville at the charming residences of Pat Nicholson. I have roamed all over the island, met hundreds of residents, watched children grow into adulthood and made some dear friends over the years. On my last visit in August and September, my longest so far, I became one more statistic in the growing list of victims of crime. Thieves broke into my rental apartment while I slept and stole my computer and camera equipment as well as cash and a number of other items. Happily I was not assaulted. The amount of money I paid for these things would be more than enough to buy a new boat and outboard motor for a fisherman; support a local soccer team for a few years or send a child to university. This was grand larceny but it never made the news. Crime has always been with us, everywhere but there is a new kind of criminality that has infected life all over the world and it has finally spread to Tobago. Hard drug crime. The sale and use of cocaine, heroin and amphetamines have become obvious everywhere in Tobago. On the beach that borders the road to the high school in Speyside the pushers boldly await their young clients and spent hypodermics are easy to find. Unlike common marijuana these drugs are costly, highly addictive and very profitable. As a result of this trade the island is awash in drug money but the trade is also producing buyers who are incapable of working but need more and more money to pay for their addiction. As the spiral of addiction and crime increases the addicts become more ruthless and violent. It is easier to rob tourists than your mother or father. But this will not last. Tourism will evaporate and the island's residents will become the new targets, the new source of fast money. (By some reports this has already begun.) That's what happens everywhere else in the world where people ignore the reality of the hard drug trade and it is coming down the road to your home in Tobago. You can bet on it. In my case the general response of both police and residents was this: "of course, you have insurance". There was great sympathy for me in the village but in the end the crime was not solved and I think it never will be. I tried hard not to have my love of Tobago stolen from me along with my possessions and the residents of the village did their best to help me. I am back in Canada but, sadly, I can no longer carry the island in my heart. It is a great loss. If you, the people of Tobago, let the drug dealers steal the island from your hearts where will you go? Robert Bowers (retired professor, University of Toronto photographer and sculptor)
"The british are assholes" Look what I read in the news!? By SARAH LYALL Published: August 23, 2008 MALIA, Greece — Even in a sea of tourists, it is easy to spot the Britons here on the northeast coast of Crete, and not just from the telltale pallor of their sun-deprived northern skin. Phil Harris/Mirrorpix An injured British tourist lay by a curb on a recent weekend after a fight in Malia, Greece. The New York Times British tourists have caused havoc at the Malia resort. They are the ones, the locals say, who are carousing, brawling and getting violently sick. They are the ones crowding into health clinics seeking morning-after pills and help for sexually transmitted diseases. They are the ones who seem to have one vacation plan: drinking themselves into oblivion. “They scream, they sing, they fall down, they take their clothes off, they cross-dress, they vomit,” Malia’s mayor, Konstantinos Lagoudakis, said in an interview. “It is only the British people — not the Germans or the French.” Malia is the latest and currently most notorious in a long list of European resorts full of young British tourists on packaged tours offering cheap alcohol and a license to behave badly. In Magaluf and Ibiza, Spain; in Ayia Napa, Cyprus; and in the Greek resorts of Faliraki, Kavos and Laganas as well as Malia, the story is the same: They come, they drink, they wreak havoc. “The government of Britain has to do something,” Mr. Lagoudakis said. “These people are giving a bad name to their country.” They are also hurting themselves in the process. A recent report published by the British Foreign Office, “British Behavior Abroad,” noted that in a 12-month period in 2006 and 2007, 602 Britons were hospitalized and 28 raped in Greece, and that 1,591 died in Spain and 2,032 were arrested there. The report did not distinguish between medical cases and arrests associated with drunkenness and those that had nothing to do with it. But it did say that “many arrests are due to behavior caused by excessive drinking.” So it would seem. Reports of scandalous incidents rumble on regularly here and elsewhere, helping to cement Britain’s reputation as the largest exporter of inebriated hooligans in Europe. Earlier this summer, flying home to Manchester from the Greek island of Kos, a pair of drunken women yelling “I need some fresh air” attacked the flight attendants with a vodka bottle and tried to wrestle the airplane’s emergency door open at 30,000 feet. The plane diverted hastily to Frankfurt, and the women were arrested. In Laganas, on the Greek island of Zakinthos, where a teenager from Sheffield died after a drinking binge this summer, more than a dozen British women were charged in July with prostitution after taking part, the authorities said, in an alfresco oral sex contest. More alarmingly, a 20-year-old British tourist partied with her sister and a friend into the early hours in Malia also in July, then returned to her hotel room and — although she had denied being pregnant — gave birth. Her companions say they returned later to find the baby dead; she has been charged with infanticide. And in Dubai, also this summer, a British man and woman who met during a drinking bout were arrested and charged with having sex on a beach, after repeatedly shouting abuse at a police officer who ordered them to stop. All of which leads to a natural question: Why? “I think that in their country, they are like prisoners and they want to feel free,” said Niki Pirovolaki, who works in a bakery on Malia’s main street and often encounters addled Britons heading back to their hotels — “if they can remember where they are staying,” she said. David Familton, a Briton who works in a club here, said that it was a question of emotional comfort. “It’s because of British culture — no one can relax, so they become inebriated to be the people they want to be,” he said. Worried about the increase in crimes and accidents afflicting drunken tourists, the British consulate in Athens has begun several campaigns, using posters, beach balls and coasters with snappy slogans, to encourage young visitors to drink responsibly. “When things do go wrong, they go wrong in quite a big way,” said Alison Beckett, the director of consular services. “What we’re trying to do here is reduce some of these avoidable accidents where they have so much to drink that they fall off balconies and are either killed or need huge operations.” What do you reckon?
