What's the best Greek island to vacation on and why? I'm planning a vacation to Greece this summer with two friends. We're all girls between 20 and 24. We're flying into and out of Athens, and have time for 3 nights on one island. We'd prefer to fly to the island in the interest of saving time. We can't decide the best island to visit. Santorini? Corfu? Crete? Mykonos? Paros? Some place that's fun, good food, good beaches, maybe some nice shopping, young people, where we can choose to be smart with our money or not. What do you think? Help us!
Greek Island Vacation? I'm planning a trip to Greece this summer with my boyfriend. I will definitely be going to Mykonos and Santorini but I was wondering..If I had time for a third island should I go to Naxos or Rhodes? And how would I get from island to island? I'm interested in going to the beach alot, and going to nice restaurants. I'm not that interested in a crazy nightlife.

I Greek vacation. Which island? I am planning a trip to the Greece with my girlfriend this summer. Have you been there? Which islands have the least amount of tourism. Vacation on a Greek island... I appreciate as many answers as possible? I'm planning to have a 1-week-vacation on one of the Greek islands with 2 friends in August. Yet we have only little idea about the islands. I'll be happy if you can recommend places or give advice on what to do. We want to have an affordable but fun vacation. Like spending time on the beach during the day and going to clubs at night... Sure all islands have nice beaches but we also want somewhere fun with a lively nightlife, young and fun people. We are looking for a reasonably priced lodging - not looking for luxury - just a clean and safe place to sleep and shower. Which island would you recommend and why? I would appreciate as many useful answers as possible. Thank you so much for your help!
Which Greek island would you suggest for a short vacation? Someone mentioned Sifnos. Any other suggestions? Short vacation 3-4 days for 2 women

Ways to save money on Greek vacation? My wife and I would like to visit Greek islands in either Spring or next Fall. Anyone know of ideas for package trips that will save us some money? We are open to either a cruise or just a multiple island trip (maybe Mykonos and Santorini) that could also include a stop in Turkey.

Which greek island is the best to visit between Kefalonia, Rhodes, Santorini, Crete, or Corfu? I will be studying in Europe for a few months next year and will be spending my last week abroad vacationing on a greek island with my mom. GREEK vacation planning...need advice please...? My wife and I want to visit Greece...Probably start in athens and then go island hopping....Santorini is a must. What other islands would you recommend. We like islands with nice beaches that are peaceful. What is the best way to travel between the islands? Is it a good idea to do a Greek Island cruise? Are there any good Greek package providers that someone can please suggest? Thank you so much for your help.
better Greek party island - Paros or Ios? A couple of friends and me are traveling to the Greek island for 10 days in late August to early Sept. We will be staying in Mykonos and are looking for another island to visit afterwards. We are in our late 20s, like women and partying all night, and recovering on the beach during the day. We do not sleep much on vacation. Which island would be best for this - Ios or Paros? I have not been able to find any recent info about either island... Thanks in advance for the help!
Which would be a better vacation - Sicily & Rome or Athens and the Greek Islands? I've always wanted to go to Greece and the Greek Islands but now reading about Sicily it seems like you could get a real good flavor of Greece because they have a lot of ancient Greek ruins. The Sicily package I'm looking at would include 2 days in Rome. I am most interested in the ruins and like active vacations. I would spend a maximum of 2 - half days at the beach and don't care to relax any more than that. Will have 12-14 days total. Robert hit on something that is key for me. I don't like to waste my time traveling and prefer seeing as much as I can in one area. When I went to Hawaii I spent the whole 10 days on one Island and the last time I went to Europe I spent most of my time in Paris. Even in the states when I go on vacation, I like to spend the entire week in one place. I don't like to waste time packing, unpacking, checking in and out and driving.
What is the best Greek Island? I am trying to plan a vacation to Greece. It starts with an airplane ride to Athens. After that, I am looking for an island that has history, good beaches, and a lot of the white and blue traditional houses. Also, if possible, close to Athens. Thank you!
where can I find info about the greek islands? I'm planning to go for vacation to some greek islands... any suggestion on where to find information about hotels and the islands?

What is the most recommended island in Greece to visit? We are going to Greece on vacation on the first week of October. We are going to visit Athens. The travel agent gave us the choice to visit one of the Greek Islands. What Island is the best in terms of nice beaches and lively atmosphere and nightlife at this time of year. Another question, is there nice beaches in Athens?
Greek Vacation Ideas? Hey, my friend and I are hoping to do a 7-day vacation to Greece, but really dont know where to start. We're thinking 3 days in Athens and 4 on an island. Any thoughts? In Athens, we want to do and see anything that a tourist should do or see, as well as relax a little bit at some cheap bars/pubs/restaraunts. What part (North/South/East/West?) of the city is a best place for us to get a hostel? For the island(s), we don't want to go somewhere overly touristy, but still with a lot of fun things to do. And a touristy island is fine, but it'd be great if there were non-touristy parts (example, we went to O'ahu in Hawai'i, and spent half our time in Waikiki (very touristy) and half on other shores, such as east, where we were virtually alone.) It's my friend's first trip outside the US, so basically I want it to be as Greek as possible without her feeling uncomfortable. Any recommendations of islands, hostels, restaurants, ideas, etc etc etc are all VERY appreciated. Thanks so much guys!
Should I go on vacation to Greece or Egypt? My boyfriend and I are planning a vacation this coming September. We have narrowed it down to Greece or Egypt. Both are vacation packages that we found that would be relatively inexpensive (under $2000/person) but we don't know how much we would need for additional spending money in each place. The Greek vacation is 3 days in Athens then a 4-day Greek island and Turkey cruise. The Egypt vacation includes 8 days from Cairo, Aswan, Luxor, and even a day and night travelling by Felucca down the Nile! We can't decide - anyone been to both of these places? Suggestions? We would like to keep the cost down as much as possible too.

bouzouki/greek instruments on greek vacation for cheap? visiting greece soon and would like to bring back some culture. thus, i would like to buy an instrument while i am there. i will be traveling all over greece to many different cities (including athens) and to a few islands. i would like to know if i will be able to find a cheap/used bouzouki or mandolin (i.e. <200 euro) fairly easily. i will be with a tour group with a tight schedule so simply wandering off will not be an option.

How much is the price of a 2 rooms appartment in Rhodos Island ? I think I'm gonna buy soon a little appartment for vacations. And also as an investment, with monthly rents I could get ( when I'm not in holidays). At first I wanted to do it in Cyprus, but there are too many problems there. I like Rhodos because it reminds me Ulysse and the Argonauts. I am also fascinated by the other greek islands...I even heard that there is a little island where live hundreds of cats...Is it true?... I'm talking about Greece, not USA

what is the point in going in a "all girls" vacation? Hi, I am a Chinese girl, on a brief (6 month) stint in Stockholm. Some of my friends (mostly European/American) are proceeding on a "all girls" vacation to some Greek islands, and invited me. One girl suggested that I come for some "fun in the sun", and that her BF will be flying down to join her for a day - she will just sneak out of the "all girls gang" for a day. I am not a kid and think something immoral is going on. Can someone clarify?

Cyprus, Malta, Crete, Greek Islands or Tunisia or else? I'm looking for the perfect spot for a beach vacation with my bf in June. Which of the countries above offers the best lagoon-type beaches? How expensive is it for a NewZealander? ...to go for vacations on a Greek island, and buy a house there? Map http://www.lonelyplanet.com/maps/europe/greece/
Depressed after vacation? I have been suffering from depression for a long time and I'm 17. I was so depressed a couple of days ago that my father took me on a 4 day vacation. We went to Greek-Turkish islands with our sailing boat. We live in Turkey so it's really close. It was so much fun considering the fact that I hadn't felt anything but pain for the previous 9 months. I felt so free. Just all my problems vanished in the islands. But now I'm back. We arrived 6 hours ago and my problems are back. The weather is not good, its raining there are clouds and I started to struggle with my problems ago. I just can't get them off my mind the way I did on vacation. I'll be going back in 2 weeks but I don't know how I will stand that. I don't know how to cope with this. Do you have any advice?

Which villa rental site is best for Europe? The web is crawing with vacation/holiday home rental sites most of which are USA oriented. I rent affordable Greek island villas and waste too much time listing with low volume sites.
Los Angeles to Europe (Rome, Venice, Athens, Greek Islands)? Hi. I would like to plan a European vacation and would like some help. I would like to visit Rome, Venice, Athens and the Greek Islands (Santorini and Rhodes). My plan is to take a one way flight from L.A. into Europe (London, Paris, Vienna, wherever) possibly stay in that city for a day or two and then take transportation to Italy (doesn't matter which city I visit first) and then go to Athens from Rome/Venice. Once in Athens I plan to take a ferry to Santorini for one day and night and then to Rhodes for one day and night. Then I would like to fly back to Los Angeles, either non-stop or landing first in a major European city and spending a day or two and flying nonstop from their to L.A. So it looks like... 1. L.A. 2. London/Paris/etc. 3. Rome/Venice 4. Rome/Venice 5. Athens 6. Islands 7. Athens and either 8. London/Paris/etc. 9. L.A. or 8. L.A. My question is what modes of transportation would be the best to use when traveling from city to city. My main concern is to minimize travel time as much as possible with cost effectiveness coming in as a close second. Thanks a bunch for your help in advance, and if you can only provide suggestions for one portion of the trip PLEASE do so. THANK YOU :) Thanks TravelGuy and also to any future posters. Just wanted to clarify that my plan is to dedicate about two weeks to this trip. Sorry for the confusion.
Is it safe for an Austrian.........................? .....to go to Greece and buy a house on a Greek island, now that they are very cheap? Greek island? Paradise vacations?
Do Greeks generally welcome foreigners buying vacation homes in Greece? I have read about Greeks being displeased with immigrants in their country but would they react the same way against foreign holiday home-owners? I'm Asian and consider buying a holiday home in one of the Cycladic islands. Thank you all for sharing your thoughts. I'll put this to vote.
Me and wife (41 & 32) want to go to 1 of the Greek Islands, but not too sure where.? Are partying days are over so we want to eat/drink/hang on beach, snorkel, and check out island. We are looking for a hotel/apt/resort right on the beach, (very important is a nice beach) child - free if possible, (but we are going in October) so I guess that doesn't matter too much. We want to stay around 2 weeks. I guess we need to choose fast, its already Sept. Any help would be great. Super Bedankt. We are also living in The Netherlands if anybody has any good vacation sites. We heard Rhodos is nice.

greece/turkery vacation? we currently have a vacation to turkey and greece booked for april, just wondering what you guys think of the weather over there in april. well be in athens and about 6 differnt greek islands and kusadasi turkey. is it warm enough in mid april to hit the beaches....and do you think it is safe in those places? thanks. ciao.
Good place to vacation in Italy or Turkey? I was in Alanya (Antalya) Turkey a few years ago and loved it. Perfect weather, warm ocean. Very clean. I've been in Italy, but never on the coast. I thought about one of the islands (Sardinia, etc.) Here is what I want: 1) Good SAND beaches. I hate stone beaches. 2) Warm water for swimming 3) Sunny 4) Not too small; something to do at night I was in Thassos (Greek island) last year. Even though the island was beautiful, and the swimming was nice, the beaches are usually stone. At night it was absolutely boring; nothing to do at all. I'd like a nice hotel that has some prearranged activities (sightseeing, water skiing, scuba diving, etc.) What can you suggest? Can you explain to me what you mean by: "is very risk from be rub or get sick"? By the way, if you have trouble spelling, why not buy the highly entertaining "Hooked on Phonics" series? My grade school teachers were Catholic nuns, and they made us memorize all the rules of phonics. We practiced every day, and as a result I am a very good speller!
Where in Europe can I go on vacation? I am a Chicagoan living in Prague. I want to go with a buddy somewhere warm, with SOFT sand beaches, great weather, and very comfortable hotels. Additionally I want a place large enough that there is something to do at night. I was on the (beautiful) Greek island of Thassos last year. The problem? Absolutely nothing to do at night. It had occurred to me that we could visit two places, but the package deals they sell here are way, way, way cheaper than what I could put together myself, so that's not an option. However, if I visited an island like Rhodes, perhaps they would have day trips to another island. (although that wasn't the case in Thassos) Uhhh.... did anyone read I want GOOD BEACHES? That kind of excludes Paris, folks. I'm thinking Santorini, Rhodes, or some place in or around Greece, Turkey, or Italy. But I can't find the right combination. Remember: 1) soft sand beaches 2) nice hotels 3) not too small; something to do at night Can anyone give me SPECIFIC places: hotels, beaches, etc. ?????????? Something about which you have personal knowledge
What language should I study? I have taken an interest Esperanto, as it is supposed to be an easy language to learn. But my Girlfriend's dad who is from Athens thinks I should have a go at Greek. We go on vacation to the Greek Islands in August and so it would be useful then. What do you guys think? Learn Afghani? Why? I only want to learn enough to get me by!! I think it will make the holiday more interesting!! Welsh??? But I live in Jolly old England!!!
Suggestions about Greek islands? Hi guys! I live in Berlin my whole life and i have decided for the first time to go for vacations in Greece! Would you rather go to Greece or Egypt for vacation ? Would you rather go to Egypt - the land of Pyramids, Pharaohs, Nile and deserts .. or go to Greece - Land of democracy & Western thought & visit the many Greek islands & beaches.
A good place to Vacation?? My mom and I are wanting to go somewhere for my 21st birthday next March outside of the U.S. ... we were thinking about the Greek Islands but we're not sure... we've been to Mexico and Ireland already, so any good ideas or suggestions?
I need ideas for a knitted gift for my mother for her cruise vacation in 3 months time!!? I have been a knitter for years but have only recently "picked up my pins" again so to speak. Having done several large projects in the last couple of months ranging from beginner to intermediate/advanced, I've got the confidence now to try something as a REAL gift! My mother is going away on her 2nd cruise in July. She'll be doing a tour around the Greek islands for 1 week, then staying in a hotel for a further week before returning home. (Just to give you an idea of temperature/location!) I was going to make her a shrug/bolero for Mothers day (March in the UK) but it turned out a little less than adequate for a wearable garment! Hence me waiting til now to try something else for her. I have recently taken a huge liking to Cat Bhordi's mobius knitting designs and was thinking of making a wrap/shawl/capelet to cover her shoulders in the evenings on the cruise liner. But apart from that one idea, I'm at a total loss!! She is in her mid forties and in an understated way, quite glamourous. During the day she's a very "linen trousers and pretty tops" kinda person, and also loves to dress up in the evenings. I'm a member of Ravelry so have lots of pattern ideas to hand, but I think this may be a case of having TOO MUCH to choose from. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!
Obama foreign policy joke? B.O. is claiming he has foreign policy experience because when he was in college he vacationed on a Greek Island. How dumb is this guy?
Where to stay: Mainland? Island? What city? Advice, please! Details inside...? My mother, sister, and I are planning a 2-week vacation to Greece around mid-August. We cannot decide where to stay! We'd like a little bit of everything: nightlife (clubs, bars, etc for me and my sister), beaches, sightseeing opportunities (things to do during the day). We would be using public transportation so consider this as well. We also would love to roam through the city - we love walking and absorbing everything around us. If you could suggest a hotel that is walking distance to and from the major areas of whichever city, that would be good too. Originally we thought Athens would be a good base, but as I read up on it, people said that it's too touristy and dirty? Not good for a real Greek experience? What about Santorini? Or would we be limited by staying on an island? Basically any advice or sharing of your experience would be helpful! Thanks Update: We are not limited to one city, it turns out. We can go two two different ones :) to two** Also: Let me rephrase: we can get a hotel in two different cities... so maybe experience mainland Greece then an island?
should i break up with my boyfriend if im in love with someone else? im in love with this other guy... he said he would like to have something serious with me but, he believes that its not a good idea in the summer cause of the distance (he will be going around the greek islands with his yacht, while i will be on vacation with family but im not sure if we're going to be at the same islands)(he is greek and im american/greek) and because of this we might say things to eachother that may later hurt us. Should i leave the guy that im with now that loves me so much and is really long term, although i dont feel the same for him, to be with the one i love? im afraid to leave him because it will hurt him and although i dont love him i want us to be friends like we were before. he is a really great guy although he is short for me (he is 1,55m and im 1,78m LOL) i dont know what to do!! i cant keep on cheating on my boyfriend (the guy i love knows im with another and tells me to break up) but i dont know what to do!!! i broke up!!!!
"The british are assholes" Look what I read in the news!? By SARAH LYALL Published: August 23, 2008 MALIA, Greece — Even in a sea of tourists, it is easy to spot the Britons here on the northeast coast of Crete, and not just from the telltale pallor of their sun-deprived northern skin. Phil Harris/Mirrorpix An injured British tourist lay by a curb on a recent weekend after a fight in Malia, Greece. The New York Times British tourists have caused havoc at the Malia resort. They are the ones, the locals say, who are carousing, brawling and getting violently sick. They are the ones crowding into health clinics seeking morning-after pills and help for sexually transmitted diseases. They are the ones who seem to have one vacation plan: drinking themselves into oblivion. “They scream, they sing, they fall down, they take their clothes off, they cross-dress, they vomit,” Malia’s mayor, Konstantinos Lagoudakis, said in an interview. “It is only the British people — not the Germans or the French.” Malia is the latest and currently most notorious in a long list of European resorts full of young British tourists on packaged tours offering cheap alcohol and a license to behave badly. In Magaluf and Ibiza, Spain; in Ayia Napa, Cyprus; and in the Greek resorts of Faliraki, Kavos and Laganas as well as Malia, the story is the same: They come, they drink, they wreak havoc. “The government of Britain has to do something,” Mr. Lagoudakis said. “These people are giving a bad name to their country.” They are also hurting themselves in the process. A recent report published by the British Foreign Office, “British Behavior Abroad,” noted that in a 12-month period in 2006 and 2007, 602 Britons were hospitalized and 28 raped in Greece, and that 1,591 died in Spain and 2,032 were arrested there. The report did not distinguish between medical cases and arrests associated with drunkenness and those that had nothing to do with it. But it did say that “many arrests are due to behavior caused by excessive drinking.” So it would seem. Reports of scandalous incidents rumble on regularly here and elsewhere, helping to cement Britain’s reputation as the largest exporter of inebriated hooligans in Europe. Earlier this summer, flying home to Manchester from the Greek island of Kos, a pair of drunken women yelling “I need some fresh air” attacked the flight attendants with a vodka bottle and tried to wrestle the airplane’s emergency door open at 30,000 feet. The plane diverted hastily to Frankfurt, and the women were arrested. In Laganas, on the Greek island of Zakinthos, where a teenager from Sheffield died after a drinking binge this summer, more than a dozen British women were charged in July with prostitution after taking part, the authorities said, in an alfresco oral sex contest. More alarmingly, a 20-year-old British tourist partied with her sister and a friend into the early hours in Malia also in July, then returned to her hotel room and — although she had denied being pregnant — gave birth. Her companions say they returned later to find the baby dead; she has been charged with infanticide. And in Dubai, also this summer, a British man and woman who met during a drinking bout were arrested and charged with having sex on a beach, after repeatedly shouting abuse at a police officer who ordered them to stop. All of which leads to a natural question: Why? “I think that in their country, they are like prisoners and they want to feel free,” said Niki Pirovolaki, who works in a bakery on Malia’s main street and often encounters addled Britons heading back to their hotels — “if they can remember where they are staying,” she said. David Familton, a Briton who works in a club here, said that it was a question of emotional comfort. “It’s because of British culture — no one can relax, so they become inebriated to be the people they want to be,” he said. Worried about the increase in crimes and accidents afflicting drunken tourists, the British consulate in Athens has begun several campaigns, using posters, beach balls and coasters with snappy slogans, to encourage young visitors to drink responsibly. “When things do go wrong, they go wrong in quite a big way,” said Alison Beckett, the director of consular services. “What we’re trying to do here is reduce some of these avoidable accidents where they have so much to drink that they fall off balconies and are either killed or need huge operations.” What do you reckon?
My boyfriend is in Iraq and he's getting 2 weeks leave. We fly anywhere in the world for FREE...but where??? My boyfriend and I are planning to take a trip. He has the opportunity to fly anywhere in the world free during his vacation leave. He's currently serving his first tour in Iraq. I'm 22 and have never been anywhere besides California. I would love to visit the Greek Islands, Paris, Spain, Italy, Hawaii... I really would love to visit Santorini and island hop but I'm afraid being somewhere hot and sometimes with no air conditioner (I read that some of the smaller islands don't have them in their hotels) would remind him of the sandbox...I just want to pick somewhere we could both go to relax and see some things we've never seen. Somewhere memorable and beautiful... Ideas? Experiences?
Sailing the Greek Isles? My Fiance and I are getting married in Santorini in September and would like to spend some time sailing. We're not exactly sure what island we plan to visit after Santorini, but we are open to suggestions. I am looking for suggestions on sailing vacations. Though I used to do a lot of sailing, and even taught sailing, it has been quite a few years, so we won't be able to do a bareboat charter. Instead, we'll probably have to do a crewed charter. Any suggestions on: 1) charter companies to use, or 2) islands to visit would be very appreciated. Thanks!
Greece Vacation!!! TIps? Okay, i am pretty sure i am going to Greece next Spring Break!! So, what is the best hotle to stay in like i want to be able to go to Athens and places like that. I think i might want to stay at Porto Galini, on the island of Lefkada. Is that close to the main land, or is every island by each other, just have to take a boat, because i think im going to be going to alot of places there, so what are some good fancy hotles. I am also interested in the anicent gods and civilization so what aresome good museums about that kind of stuff? Good activeis to do there? BEACHES! (if thereare any) And, whjat is the modern city like, is it like building like new york, or like somthing else, if you have a picture, i would like to see. And what is the food like? And dose everyone ther speek Greek, or some engilish? Thank you for your help!
Can anyone tell me about Kefallonia? I'm Greek but I've never been there...I'm going for vacations and I would like you to tell me some things about the island.
Greek Travel Itinerary? Hello! me and my sister are planning a trip to greece from august 1st to the 16th. we are having trouble planning an itinerary and picking islands to visit. We knoe we want to go to Kephalonia and Mykonos, but are not sure exactly how long we should stay in each place. we want to cover as much ground as possible, but still want a relaxing vacation. we know those places are on opposite sides but we have figured how to travel between both sides with one night in athens. we would like to split our time between relaxing and scenery and fun islands with a lot of nightlife. we also want to stay away from anything to 'touristy' or overdone. have been to ibiza and it was not for us. also not VERY interested in corfu, crete, santorini or ios. although maybe one of those places is ok. very picky i know, but thats why we need help! thanks!

Recommend an exotic and beautiful vacation destination? I would like to take a trip with my parents and a few friends somewhere very beautiful and exotic. The Greek island of Santorini is very high on my list, but i would like to know of other places. I would like to go somewhere that has a very surreal and breathtaking beauty. Anyone know any?
