What is a tropical island that is a common vacation spot if you live in or near Great Britain?

I'm not really that picky, the only thing is that this island would have to have been popular in the late 1970's, as well.

1. Well it's not exactly 'tropical' as the word tropical has a very strict geographic meaning, but perhaps you are thinking of somewhere in the Canary Islands, such as Tenerife or Lanzarote.
2. Not tropical - but the most popular islands in the 1970s would have been the Balearics, particularly Majorca and Minorca.
3. Malta.
