Vacation destination: Jones Beach, Where to stay?

My boyfriend and I would like to spend a few days in Jones Beach, Long Island. We hear great things about it. Does anyone know of affordable and clean hotels in that area to stay and which parts are the best for shopping and activities? It would be our first time visiting.

try the holiday inn on ocean and 5th. it is clean and affordable.
Jones Beach is not really a vacation destination. Its a pretty decent beach but not somwher you would stay for a few days. The surrounding towns are all residential w not much going on except for a few retsruants and stores. There are hotels like the holiday inn but most are on Sunrise Hghwy which is along busy street. why dont you go to the hamptons or liek Fire Island or something.
Jones is a nice beach but I would not recommend it as a vacation destination. A day trip from Manhattan, definitely. If you want to make Long Island a vacation destination, I'd think the Hampton's would be more suitable. The only shopping available at Jones Beach is the odd souvenir stand/snack bar. There is a small museum, a concert venue, a mini-golf course, etc. http://nysparks.state.ny.us/parks/info.asp?parkID=46 The Garden City Hotel (recommended above) is a very nice hotel but at $299 a night I don't think that is what you are referring to as affordable. I would go with a chain hotel like Holiday Inn or Red Roof, etc. There are some very nice mom and pop hotels on LI, but not too many around Jones. There is a Holiday Inn Express in Lynbrook - Rockville Center that is about 6 miles from Jones. Rockvill Center has quite a few bars and restaurants. Some shopping as well. Still, rather than Jones Beach as you destination, look at the Hampton's or even Fire Island.
