Good vacation spots near New York City?

my mother and i would like to go on a last minute getaway before the summer is up. however, she doesnt fly nor does she want to drive for a long period of time. are there any places in the area that good vacation spots besides wildwood, nj or ocean city, nj? any places with beaches? perhaps long island? any suggestions?

1. well where do you live? for example if you lived in toronto you could just take about a one hour drive to Buffalo.not that exciting but you can shop in Walden Galleria.
2. What about the Poconos in PA or The Hamptons in LI?
3. We summer in East Hampton and although the idea of another tourist bogging down Montauk Highway, the Hamptons really are a great place to holiday. I suggest finding a motel in Montauk, Westhampton or one of the Quoges. The nicest thing about the Hamptons is that you can take Hampton Jitney or Hampton Luxury Liner out and leave your car behind (departs from Manhattan and Brooklyn). Entertainment ranges from the very laid back beach lifestyle (without the crowds or garbage in jersey), to world class shopping, dining, clubing etc. And of course, ample celeb sightings for the tourists.
4. Jones Beach Long Island... Montauk... Bar Beach...Hamptons Palisades NY has the greatest mall ever!!!
