What are some tips/tricks for getting a deep discount on a last minute flight?

I plan to leave on New Year's Day (this Thursday) and fly into either FLL or MIA from PIT. I will leave on 1/4. So far, I've found nothing under $350 and I've checked all the discount sites. What are some ways to get a cheap seat at the very last minute? Do airlines even do this? Would I find the lowest price on the day of departure? Or the day before departure? Wow Neil - thanks for the optimism.

  1. Here's the best tip: Forget it. Edit: That wasn't optimism. It also wasn't pessimism. It was realism. After all, you yourself said you already checked.
  2. I would highly recommend both hotwire and priceline, flycheapabroad, and bookairlinetickets.com. I've searched around for airfare quite a bit, and these three sites usually ring true as the cheapest. Other than that, I'd go to sites like igougo.com, travelzoo.com, kayak.com, and bookingbuddy.com. These sites offer searches of multiple online airfare websites, making it easier and less time consuming to compare prices. As for when to buy, I usually go to farecast.com. They pretty accurately predict when a good time to buy a flight would be based off of past and current trends, etc. It's pretty useful. Another site I've found handy is rightflight.org. They did a bunch of research on the various airfare sites to see which sites are usually the cheapest. They also have a list of most of the international airfare sites on their webpage (60+), which can be pretty handy in and of itself. Hope this helped!
  3. I have traveled as late as the day of at a discount that wasnt available two weeks prior. I got a round trip ticket from GA to NJ the day before (less than 24 hours before departure) and an upgraded mid-size rental for 5 days for $300. I have traveled using this site prior as well and got a phenominal deal. http://www.lastminute.com
  4. If you haven't found it yet, I would recommend checking out the website BookMe dot com. You can compare ALL the reputable travel sites, and save money. Good luck!
