Any advice on booking hols to Dominican republic,?

Im trying to book hols to dom rep. found various all inclusive under £500, just for 2 weeks My bf has never been abroad so im tryin2 do this alone. I dnt wana get there and it be awful. Have ppl done accomodation allocated on arrival before is it ok? all 3 star places; Luperon, Derado club or sun tropical resort. Ive checked reviews and like every 80 % say perfectly good, amazing or cant wait to go back, then 20 say it was place from hell, so not helpful. Any ideas people, i was looking to book one off thomascook.co.uk but open to suggestions, its north part of island, hope thats nice.

1. I went to Sunscape The Beach last year...was fabulous....reasonably priced as well...cannot go wrong with that choice.. My advice is go to www.tripadvisor.com there you can read testimonies of people who have been there and get a pretty good idea of what places are like!!! have fun
2. We went on a package holiday there. The problem is that if you book somewhere which isnt so good, you may not be able to easily go to a restaurant or arrange your own entertainment etc cos the hotels tend to be all inclusive cos there is nowhere else in the resorts to go! Its not always a safe place to travel alone and be out in the towns. It may be safer to book through a travel agent then you know exactly what youre getting. Having said that the North is really beautiful, the sea is brilliant, and lots of trips etc to go on.- boogie boarding, swimming with sharks, safari-ing and so on.
3. don't wanna spoil it for ya babe, but North is cheapest for a reason. please have a rethink, don't pay too much, but pay more than £500 and don't do AOA. I've done Dom Rep 6 times and I love it. Make sure ya do a catamaran trip and do some snorkeling. Enjoy X X X
4. I have never been but can give you second hand advice from 2 members of my family. If you go all inclusive then go at least 4 star, The last thing you want is to have paid for all your food , drink and entertainment to find it's inedible, only available at certain times and tacky. I know it's quite a jump but I think if you paid a couple of hundred extra you would have a far better time.
