Best way to get last minute airline tickets?

I want to fly up to New York from Florida this weekend. I don't need to take the trip so I am willing to wait until the last minute to take the flight. I remember that airlines use to give out very low rates if you were waiting for the flight when it was about to take off or something like that. Does that still exist? I'm willing to go to the airport and leave last minute.

  1. You might want to call a particular airline and ask them about those last-minute cheap flights. I can tell you that I have gotten cheap fares on priceline.com I got a round-trip ticket to Madrid, Spain, from New Orleans for about $400. That's cheap!
  2. Really cheap last-minute flights are mostly a relic of the past. Airlines sometimes put some destinations on sale for weekend trips in the off-season, but those aren't usually "ultra-cheap", just maybe a bit better than the normal fare would be if you had bought in advance. You can see those here: http://www.smartertravel.com/airfare/deals-at-a-glance.php For Florida-New York, Brendan Airways (aka "USA3000") is a good bet for last-minute flights. http://www.usa3000.com ... but be sure to first try your cities and dates here: http://www.bookingbuddy.com -- because there's good competition on NY-FL routes, sometimes you can still get a decent deal on last-minute flights. If you need car or hotel + air, then it's often cheaper to bundle them for last-minute. In that case, http://us.lastminute.com is really good.
