If someone were to back out of a trip last minute, is it possible to change the name on the ticket?

My friend was supposed to accomany me and some coworkers to a christmas party a few states over and now has backed out last minute due to an emergency. Everything is already paid for and her name is already on a plane ticket. Im wondering if there is any way i can fix this so I don't look bad. Can I submit and info change and bring another friend?

1. Airlines usually don't allow this sort of thing, they say it's for 'security reasons' but they just want to keep the money. Your options are to either pay extra for the person to be able to use the ticket at a later date, which at least allows someone to get something out of it, or pay a fine to cancel the ticket and get a partial refund.
2. Airline tickets are subject to very specific rules. If you bought the cheapest tickets that you could find, it is likely that no changes are allowed, and no refunds are available. Even if you can get a credit, a lot of the time it can only be used by the original passenger, so that doesnt do you much good! In order to find out the conditions of the ticket, you will need to contact your travel agent and have them look into it for you - if a ticket can be changed or refunded you can expect to pay about $250 as a change fee, or lose $250 and get the rest of the money back. If you didnt book with a travel agent, you are going to have to try and contact expedia or whereever you booked it through, but this time of year thats going to be very hard. You are probably better off in that case calling the airline directly. Also - hopefully you purchased travel insurance - if you did, you can probably claim the value of the ticket back. If not, and your friend paid on a credit card, they may have some sort of insurance built into it which can help, but usally the credit card insurance isnt as good as people think. Good Luck!
