Can anyone suggest some interesting things to do in Southampton UK. I will be holidaying there late Dec/Jan.?

I live on a small island in the South Atlantic and as I have never been to Southampton before, I am keen to hear 'legitimate' suggestions. (I have previously been to London) My partner and I are very much into sport activities...ie: racket games, hiking etc. I would also be glad to hear of any worthwhile shopping areas or interesting places to visit. Can you help?

  1. Explore The New Forest which is close by. There are the famous New Forest ponies. It is a great area for walking, camping and horse riding. Visit Isle of Wight. Cruise The Solent. Explore hostoric towns along South Coast.
  2. Southampton? January? I'd go for a day trip to France.
  3. I would suggest not visiting Southampton.
  4. Try www.visit-southampton.co.uk. It will tell you all you need to know.
  5. Southampton has 3 shopping centres in the city centre and the main shops on the HighStreet (Above Bar) http://www.abbotswood.hants.sch.uk/Photos/insideschool/weskkey.JPG http://www.hants.gov.uk/business/images/westquay.jpg.jpg http://www.visit-southampton.co.uk/xsdbimgs/nightclubs%20neon%20signs%20080.jpg There are tons of bars and small clubs and also Lesure world with a cinema, restaurants and nightclubs. There is a sports centre with skiing (dry ski slope) If you like hiking you should spend some time in the New Forest or head up towards Salisbury (where Stonehenge is) But the main past times in Southampton and Portsmouth are definatly shopping, drinking and eating. Of course you could also go and watch Southampton Football team playing at the Saint Mary's Stadium.
  6. Hunny! You're on the edge of the New Forest which I would Highly recommend you go to. Lots to do there for what you and your partner are interested in. Hiking, Horse Riding, Cycling etc etc Oh and lots of lovely warm, cosy pubs too Southampton is just another crowded busy city. My Aunt lives down just outside of Southampton and hates going into the city herself and she's a resident!!! Another place to go for the day which is just down the road (30mins) from Southampton .............Portsmouth. Portsmouth is great, especially the Historic dockyard, where you can also do harbour tours. It also has a lovely little shopping bit on the sea front with cafe's restaurants etc all over looking the sea. We've had meals there on occasions when we've gone to Portsmouth for the day and its been lovely. Planning to do a stay over one night too. New Forest of nothing, Wouldn't really recommend Centre of Southampton really. Bit studenty-fid if you as me
